The Battle of Ain Jalut was fought between the Mamluk Sultanate and the Mongols in the Levant. The Mamluks, led by Qutuz and Baybars, defeated a Mongol force in one of the first major checks on Mongol westward expansion.
Ain Jalut became famous because it disproved the notion of unstoppable Mongol advance and secured Mamluk control in Egypt and Syria. It was a major turning point in Near Eastern and steppe military history.
