The Battle of Alesia was the culminating engagement of Julius Caesar's Gallic campaigns. Caesar trapped Vercingetorix and his forces inside the hill fort of Alesia, then built immense lines of fortification both inward and outward to resist attack from within and from a massive Gallic relief army.
Alesia demonstrated Roman engineering, discipline, and strategic endurance on an extraordinary scale. The battle effectively ended large-scale Gallic resistance and paved the way for the Roman domination of Gaul.
