The Battle of Hastings was fought between William, Duke of Normandy, and King Harold II of England. William's forces defeated the Anglo-Saxon army, and Harold was killed, paving the way for the Norman conquest of England.
Hastings transformed English history by replacing the ruling elite, reshaping landholding, administration, language, and aristocratic culture. Few single battles had a more lasting effect on the identity and development of a kingdom.
