The Battle of Jutland was the largest naval battle of World War I, fought between the British Royal Navy and the German High Seas Fleet. Tactically complex and bitterly contested, it ended without a simple battlefield verdict.
Strategically, however, Jutland preserved British command of the sea and kept the German fleet from changing the naval balance. It remains one of the most studied modern fleet engagements.
