
The Battle of Kursk was one of the largest armored clashes in history and a decisive Soviet victory over German forces. Germany launched an offensive against a protruding Soviet salient, but the Red Army had prepared deep defensive belts and powerful reserves.
Kursk mattered because it ended Germany's ability to seize the strategic initiative on the Eastern Front. After Kursk, Soviet offensives increasingly drove the war westward.
