The Battle of Sedan was a decisive engagement in the Franco-Prussian War in which Prussian-led German forces surrounded and defeated the French army. Emperor Napoleon III was captured, and French imperial rule collapsed soon afterward.
Sedan mattered because it accelerated German unification under Prussian leadership and transformed the European balance of power. It was one of the foundational military events behind the creation of the German Empire.
