The Battle of the Milvian Bridge was fought between Constantine and Maxentius in a struggle for control of the Roman Empire. Constantine's victory outside Rome led directly to his rise as one of the empire's dominant rulers.
The battle is especially famous because of its connection to Constantine's reported religious vision before combat and the subsequent growth of imperial support for Christianity. Its political and cultural consequences far exceeded the battlefield itself.
