Leo Nocentelli's guitar work on Cissy Strut is the defining statement of New Orleans funk guitar. The syncopated, heavily rhythmic approach — with notes placed in the spaces between the beat as much as on it — influenced every funk and R&B guitarist who followed. James Brown, Prince, and countless others drew from the Meters' rhythmic vocabulary, and Nocentelli's guitar was its sharpest expression.
