The guitar work throughout Purple Haze, and particularly the solo, established Jimi Hendrix as the most revolutionary electric guitarist of his generation upon first listen. The dissonant opening tritone riff, the whammy bar dives, and the pentatonic fury of the solo introduced textures that rock guitar had never produced before. Hendrix recorded it in one take at De Lane Lea Studios in London.
