Robert Johnson's guitar playing on Sweet Home Chicago and his entire recorded output of 29 songs recorded in 1936 and 1937 established the Delta blues vocabulary that every rock guitarist ultimately draws from. Johnson's ability to play bass, rhythm, and lead simultaneously on an acoustic guitar in open tuning created a full-band sound from one instrument, and the myth surrounding him — including the legend of the crossroads deal with the devil — made him the most romanticized figure in American music.
