Number Formats in Excel

Number formatting controls how values display in spreadsheet cells without changing the actual data. Excel, developed by Microsoft in Seattle, Washington, released its first version in 1985 and now offers over 12 different built-in number format categories that users can apply to organize financial, scientific, and statistical data effectively.

Common Number Format Types

  • General - the default format displaying numbers as entered
  • Number - controls decimal places and thousands separators
  • Currency - displays monetary values with symbols ($, €, £)
  • Percentage - multiplies values by 100 and adds the % symbol
  • Date - presents dates in formats like 1/15/2024 or January 15, 2024
  • Time - shows times as hours, minutes, and seconds
  • Accounting - aligns currency symbols and decimal points in columns

Practical Applications

Financial analysts in New York and London use currency formatting to display values with specific decimal places. Scientists apply scientific notation to represent measurements like 3.2E+05. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) established standardized date format recommendations in 1988, helping Excel users worldwide maintain consistency.

Formatting 1500 as currency displays it as $1,500.00, while the same number as a percentage becomes 150000%. Proper number formats improve spreadsheet readability and prevent calculation errors when sharing files internationally.
