The shorter GRE has ONE essay: "Analyze an Issue." 30 minutes.
Format: You're given a general statement and asked to agree, disagree, or qualify. You must support your position with reasons and examples.
Scoring: 0-6 in half-point increments. Scored by one human + one AI grader. Average of the two.
What a 5+ essay needs:
1. Clear thesis in the introduction
2. 2-3 body paragraphs with specific examples
3. Acknowledgment of the opposing viewpoint
4. Logical organization and transitions
5. Varied sentence structure and vocabulary
6. A conclusion that doesn't just repeat the intro
What it does NOT need: Perfect grammar. Flowery language. Personal anecdotes. The graders want structured reasoning, not creative writing.
