High-Frequency GRE Words — Set 2

Apathy — lack of interest or emotion

Arbitrary — based on random choice, not reason

Arcane — mysterious, understood by few

Arduous — difficult, requiring great effort

Artful — clever, skillful (sometimes deceptive)

Ascetic — practicing strict self-denial

Assiduous — showing great care and perseverance

Audacious — bold, daring, sometimes recklessly so

Auspicious — favorable, promising success

Austere — severe, strict, unadorned


Pattern recognition: Many GRE words have Latin or Greek roots. "Auspicious" comes from Latin "auspex" (bird watcher) — ancient Romans watched birds for omens. Knowing roots helps you decode unfamiliar words on test day.
