Fraction conversions to memorize:
1/4 = 0.25. 1/3 = 0.333. 1/5 = 0.20. 1/6 = 0.167. 1/8 = 0.125.
2/3 = 0.667. 3/4 = 0.75. 3/8 = 0.375. 5/8 = 0.625. 7/8 = 0.875.
Comparing fractions: Cross multiply.
3/7 vs 5/11: 3x11 = 33, 5x7 = 35. Since 35 > 33, then 5/11 > 3/7.
Adding fractions: Find LCD.
1/3 + 1/4 = 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12
Multiplying: Multiply across. Cancel first if possible.
3/4 x 8/9 = cancel 3 and 9 (divide by 3), cancel 4 and 8 (divide by 4) = 1/1 x 2/3 = 2/3
GRE speed tip: When comparing, estimating, or eliminating, convert to decimals mentally. "Is 7/12 more or less than 0.6?" 7/12 = 0.583. Less.
