The Shorter GRE — Updated 2023
ETS shortened the GRE significantly in September 2023.
What changed:
1. No more unscored section — the experimental section was removed
2. One essay instead of two — only the "Analyze an Issue" task remains
3. Total time cut — from 3 hours 45 minutes to under 2 hours
4. Fewer questions — but same scoring scale (130-170)
What stayed the same:
Section-level adaptive design
Question types unchanged
Score scale unchanged
At-home testing still available
Advantage: Less fatigue. The old GRE was an endurance test. The new one rewards focus over stamina.
