Carbohydrates are the body's preferred and most efficient energy source, especially for the brain and high-intensity exercise.

Types of carbohydrates:

  • Simple carbs — sugars (glucose, fructose, sucrose). Fast digestion, quick energy spike.
  • Complex carbs — starches and fiber. Slow digestion, sustained energy.
  • Fiber — indigestible carbs that feed gut bacteria and regulate digestion.

Glycemic Index (GI): Measures how fast a food raises blood sugar. High GI = fast spike. Low GI = slow, steady rise.

Best sources: Oats, sweet potatoes, legumes, whole grains, vegetables, fruit.

Key insight: Not all carbs are equal. Whole food carbs behave completely differently in the body than refined sugars.
