The ketogenic (keto) diet is a very low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet that shifts the body's primary fuel source from glucose to ketones.

Macronutrient breakdown:

  • Fat: 70–80% of calories
  • Protein: 15–20%
  • Carbohydrates: 5–10% (typically <50g/day)

Ketosis: When carb intake is very low, the liver converts fat into ketone bodies (beta-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate) which the brain and muscles use for fuel.

Evidence-backed uses:

  • Epilepsy — most established use. Reduces seizures, especially in drug-resistant cases.
  • Type 2 diabetes — improves insulin sensitivity, lowers blood sugar
  • Weight loss — often rapid initial loss (partly water weight)

Concerns: Difficult to sustain long-term, may raise LDL in some people, limits fruit and fiber intake.
