The Paleo diet (Paleolithic diet) is based on foods presumed to be eaten by early humans — before agriculture and food processing.
What the Paleo diet includes:
- Meat, fish, seafood, eggs
- Vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds
- Some roots and tubers
What it excludes:
- Grains, legumes, dairy
- Refined sugar, processed oils, salt
- All processed foods
Evidence:
- Short-term studies show improvements in blood sugar, lipids, blood pressure
- High in protein and fiber — satiating
- Eliminates most ultra-processed food by default
- Long-term outcomes poorly studied
Criticisms:
- Eliminates legumes and whole grains — both strongly associated with longevity
- "Paleo humans" ate widely varied diets depending on geography
- Expensive and difficult to sustain
