Active Reading — How to Read LSAT Passages

Don't read passively. Read with purpose.

As you read each paragraph, note:

1. What is the main idea of this paragraph?

2. How does it relate to the previous paragraph?

3. What is the author's opinion? (positive, negative, neutral)

Annotation method:

Bracket the main point of each paragraph.

Circle opinion words ("surprisingly," "unfortunately," "importantly").

Note transitions ("however," "in contrast," "moreover").

Time allocation: 3-4 minutes reading, 4-5 minutes on questions. If you understand the passage well, questions go fast. If you rush reading, every question takes forever.

Comparative passages: Note what the two authors agree on, disagree on, and how their arguments differ in scope or method.
