Macrobiotics has real critics. You should know the arguments.
B12 deficiency: Valid concern. Plant foods do not provide reliable B12. Fish helps. Supplementation or fortified foods may be needed. Monitor levels.
Restrictive: Valid for strict practice. Kushi's modern framework is flexible enough for most people.
Cancer cure claims: Ohsawa and some followers made unsubstantiated claims. No diet cures cancer. Macrobiotics may support health during treatment but should never replace medical care.
Not evidence-based: Partially true. Yin-yang theory is philosophical, not scientific. However, the foods themselves (whole grains, vegetables, fermented foods, minimal processing) align perfectly with evidence-based nutrition.
Bottom line: Take what works. Leave what does not. The dietary core is sound. The philosophy is a useful lens, not gospel.
