Your First Macrobiotic Shopping List

Grains: Short-grain brown rice (5 lb bag), millet, rolled oats

Beans: Adzuki beans, green lentils, organic tofu

Sea vegetables: Wakame, kombu, nori sheets

Fermented: Barley miso (2-year), soy sauce (naturally brewed), umeboshi plums

Vegetables: Carrots, onions, cabbage, kale, daikon (if available), winter squash

Condiments: Dark sesame oil, brown rice vinegar, sea salt, unhulled sesame seeds

Tea: Kukicha twig tea


Where: Asian grocery stores for sea vegetables, miso, umeboshi. Natural food stores (Whole Foods, co-ops) for organic grains/beans. Online: Natural Import, Gold Mine, Eden Foods.


Budget tip: Buy grains and beans in bulk. They are the cheapest foods on the planet. A macrobiotic diet is less expensive than a standard American diet once you stop buying processed food, dairy, and meat.
