Water — Less Is More

Macrobiotics does NOT recommend drinking 8 glasses of water a day. This contradicts mainstream advice.

The View: If you eat properly (whole grains, soup, vegetables), you get substantial water from food. Excess water dilutes digestive enzymes and stresses kidneys.

Guidelines: Drink when thirsty. Sip kukicha tea between meals. Avoid ice-cold drinks — they shock digestion. Room temperature or warm is preferred.

Signs of excess water: Frequent urination, puffy face, low energy, cold hands/feet.

Signs of too little: Dark urine, dry skin, constipation, headache.

Rule: Let thirst be your guide, not a number.
