Flow is a state of complete absorption in a challenging activity, described by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi as characterized by effortless concentration, loss of self-consciousness, distorted sense of time, and intrinsic reward. Athletes call it being 'in the zone.' Meditation and flow share important characteristics — both involve sustained present-moment attention, diminished self-referential thinking, and reduced DMN activity. Research suggests that meditation practice increases the frequency and accessibility of flow states by training the attentional and self-regulatory capacities that flow requires. Flow is considered by many psychologists the pinnacle of human performance and happiness.
