Jon Kabat-Zinn (born 1944) is the founder of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and the person most responsible for bringing mindfulness into mainstream Western medicine and science. A molecular biologist trained at MIT, Kabat-Zinn studied Zen and Vipassana meditation with teachers including Philip Kapleau and Seungsahn and in 1979 founded the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. His books, particularly 'Full Catastrophe Living' and 'Wherever You Go, There You Are,' have sold millions of copies and his definition of mindfulness — 'paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally' — is the most quoted definition in scientific literature.
