Anxiety is the most common mental health condition worldwide, affecting an estimated 264 million people. A major meta-analysis published in JAMA Internal Medicine reviewed 47 studies involving over 3,500 participants and found that mindfulness meditation programs produced moderate evidence of improved anxiety, depression, and pain. Mindfulness works for anxiety by teaching practitioners to observe anxious thoughts and physical sensations without being controlled by them — recognizing that a thought is just a thought and a physical sensation is just a sensation, not a catastrophe requiring immediate action.
