Insomnia affects approximately one-third of adults at some point in their lives, and chronic insomnia affects 10-15% of the population. Mindfulness meditation improves sleep by reducing the hyperarousal — the racing thoughts, physical tension, and anxious planning — that prevent sleep onset and maintenance. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that mindfulness meditation significantly improved sleep quality in older adults compared to a sleep hygiene education program. Body scan and progressive relaxation practices are particularly effective for sleep, and meditation apps have built entire product lines around sleep-focused content.
