Chronic pain affects over 50 million adults in the United States and is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Jon Kabat-Zinn developed MBSR specifically for chronic pain patients, and decades of research have confirmed that mindfulness meditation significantly reduces the suffering associated with pain — not necessarily the intensity of the pain signal, but the psychological reaction to it. The key insight is the distinction between pain (the raw physical sensation) and suffering (the mental overlay of resistance, fear, and catastrophizing). Meditators learn to observe pain with equanimity, reducing the secondary suffering that often exceeds the primary physical sensation.
