Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is an 8-week structured program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1979. Designed for patients with chronic pain and stress-related conditions, MBSR combines body scan meditation, sitting meditation, and gentle yoga into a secular, clinically validated framework. Participants meet weekly for 2.5-hour sessions plus a daylong silent retreat, and are asked to practice 45 minutes daily at home. MBSR has been studied in over 1,000 peer-reviewed papers and is now offered in hospitals, corporations, schools, and prisons worldwide.
