The default mode network (DMN) is a set of interconnected brain regions that become active when the mind is not focused on a specific external task — during mind-wandering, self-referential thinking, and rumination. It is sometimes called the 'me network' because it is associated with thoughts about oneself, the past, and the future. Overactivity of the DMN is linked to depression, anxiety, and rumination. Meditation — particularly focused attention practices — reliably reduces DMN activity and connectivity, which researchers believe underlies many of meditation's psychological benefits, including reduced anxiety and reduced negative self-talk.
