Thich Nhat Hanh (1926–2022) was a Vietnamese Zen master, poet, and peace activist who made mindfulness accessible to millions of Western readers through over 100 books, including 'The Miracle of Mindfulness' and 'Peace Is Every Step.' Exiled from Vietnam in 1966 for his anti-war activism, he founded Plum Village monastery in France, which became one of the largest Buddhist communities in the Western world. Hanh's teaching emphasized 'engaged Buddhism' — the integration of mindfulness practice with social justice work — and his concept of interbeing, the radical interconnectedness of all phenomena.
