Walking meditation transforms the ordinary act of walking into a mindfulness practice. Rather than walking to get somewhere, you walk to be present. Attention is placed on the physical sensations of walking — the lifting and placing of each foot, the movement of the legs, the feeling of the ground underfoot, the rhythm of the breath. Thich Nhat Hanh, the Vietnamese Zen master, made walking meditation central to his teachings, describing it as a way to 'kiss the earth with your feet.' Walking meditation is particularly useful for people who find seated meditation difficult or who feel restless and need to move their body.
