In the classical Indian system described in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras (approximately 400 CE), meditation (dhyana) is the seventh of eight limbs of yoga — preceded by ethical practices, physical postures, breath control, and sense withdrawal. The physical yoga practice (asana) that dominates Western yoga studios was traditionally understood as preparation for meditation, not an end in itself. Research confirms that yoga and meditation practiced together produce complementary benefits: yoga addresses the body's physical tension and restlessness, making it easier to settle into stillness for meditation.
