Word Problems — English to Math

The hardest part isn't the math. It's translating the words.

Translation guide:

"is" / "was" / "equals" = equals sign

"more than" / "greater than" = addition

"less than" / "fewer than" = subtraction

"of" = multiplication (especially with fractions/percents)

"per" = division or use as a rate

"twice" = 2 times

"a number" = x

Example: "Five more than twice a number is 17."

2x + 5 = 17, so x = 6

Common trap: "3 less than x" = x - 3, NOT 3 - x. The "less than" reverses the order.

Strategy: Translate one phrase at a time. Write each piece as math. Then assemble and solve.
