
The hardest part isn't the math. It's translating the words.
Translation guide:
"is" / "was" / "equals" = equals sign
"more than" / "greater than" = addition
"less than" / "fewer than" = subtraction
"of" = multiplication (especially with fractions/percents)
"per" = division or use as a rate
"twice" = 2 times
"a number" = x
Example: "Five more than twice a number is 17."
2x + 5 = 17, so x = 6
Common trap: "3 less than x" = x - 3, NOT 3 - x. The "less than" reverses the order.
Strategy: Translate one phrase at a time. Write each piece as math. Then assemble and solve.
