Negation in Spanish is simple: place no directly before the conjugated verb.
Basic Negation
- Hablo español. → No hablo español. — I don't speak Spanish.
- Tengo hambre. → No tengo hambre. — I'm not hungry.
Double Negation
Spanish requires double negation — it is grammatically correct and mandatory:
- No tengo nada. — I have nothing. (lit. I don't have nothing)
- No hay nadie aquí. — There is nobody here.
- No voy nunca. — I never go.
Key Negative Words
- nada — nothing
- nadie — nobody
- nunca / jamás — never
- tampoco — neither / not either
- ningún / ninguno — none
If the negative word comes before the verb, you don't need no: Nunca como carne. — I never eat meat.
