Negation in Spanish is simple: place no directly before the conjugated verb.

Basic Negation

  • Hablo español.No hablo español. — I don't speak Spanish.
  • Tengo hambre.No tengo hambre. — I'm not hungry.

Double Negation

Spanish requires double negation — it is grammatically correct and mandatory:

  • No tengo nada. — I have nothing. (lit. I don't have nothing)
  • No hay nadie aquí. — There is nobody here.
  • No voy nunca. — I never go.

Key Negative Words

  • nada — nothing
  • nadie — nobody
  • nunca / jamás — never
  • tampoco — neither / not either
  • ningún / ninguno — none

If the negative word comes before the verb, you don't need no: Nunca como carne. — I never eat meat.
