The second and third major verb groups end in -ER and -IR. Their endings are very similar — with two differences in nosotros and vosotros for -IR verbs.

-ER Pattern — comer (to eat)

  • yo — como, tú — comes, él — come
  • nosotros — comemos, vosotros — coméis, ellos — comen

-IR Pattern — vivir (to live)

  • yo — vivo, tú — vives, él — vive
  • nosotros — vivimos ← differs, vosotros — vivís ← differs, ellos — viven

Common -ER Verbs

  • comer — to eat, beber — to drink, leer — to read, correr — to run

Common -IR Verbs

  • vivir — to live, escribir — to write, abrir — to open, decidir — to decide
