The Spanish alphabet (el alfabeto) has 27 letters — the same 26 as English plus ñ. Spanish is almost entirely phonetic: you spell words the way you say them.

The 27 Letters

A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, Ñ, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z

Key Differences from English

  • H is always silent: hola = oh-la
  • J sounds like English H: jardín = har-DEEN
  • LL sounds like Y: llama = YA-ma
  • Ñ sounds like NY: España = es-PAN-ya
  • RR is a trilled double R: perro (dog)

Pure Vowels

  • A = ah (father), E = eh (bed), I = ee (feet), O = oh (more), U = oo (food)

Mastering vowel sounds from day one will make your pronunciation dramatically more accurate.
