Gustar expresses likes and dislikes, but it works differently from English. Instead of "I like something," Spanish says "something is pleasing to me."

The Structure

Indirect object pronoun + gusta/gustan + subject

  • gusta — used when what is liked is singular or an infinitive
  • gustan — used when what is liked is plural

Examples

  • Me gusta el café. — I like coffee.
  • Me gustan los tacos. — I like tacos.
  • Me gusta bailar. — I like to dance.
  • ¿Te gusta la música? — Do you like music?
  • A ella le gustan los libros. — She likes books.
  • No nos gusta el frío. — We don't like the cold.

Emphasis and Clarification

Add a + name/pronoun for clarity:
A mí me gusta, pero a él no le gusta. — I like it, but he doesn't.
