Gustar expresses likes and dislikes, but it works differently from English. Instead of "I like something," Spanish says "something is pleasing to me."
The Structure
Indirect object pronoun + gusta/gustan + subject
- gusta — used when what is liked is singular or an infinitive
- gustan — used when what is liked is plural
Examples
- Me gusta el café. — I like coffee.
- Me gustan los tacos. — I like tacos.
- Me gusta bailar. — I like to dance.
- ¿Te gusta la música? — Do you like music?
- A ella le gustan los libros. — She likes books.
- No nos gusta el frío. — We don't like the cold.
Emphasis and Clarification
Add a + name/pronoun for clarity:
A mí me gusta, pero a él no le gusta. — I like it, but he doesn't.
