Ir means "to go" and is among the most useful verbs in Spanish. Its present tense forms look nothing like the infinitive — memorize them directly.

Present Tense

  • yo — voy
  • tú — vas
  • él/ella/usted — va
  • nosotros — vamos
  • vosotros — vais
  • ellos/ustedes — van

Ir + A + Place

  • Voy a la escuela. — I am going to school.
  • Vamos al mercado. — We are going to the market.
  • ¿Adónde vas? — Where are you going?

Ir + A + Infinitive = Near Future

  • Voy a comer. — I am going to eat.
  • Va a llover. — It is going to rain.
  • Vamos a estudiar. — We are going to study.

¡Vamos! = Let's go! — one of the most useful phrases you'll use.
