The civics test is an oral exam given by a USCIS officer during your naturalization interview.
How it works:
USCIS has a list of 100 official civics questions
The officer asks you up to 10 questions from the list
You must answer at least 6 correctly to pass (60%)
Questions are asked and answered verbally — not written
Special rule for seniors:
Applicants age 65 or older who have been a Green Card holder for 20+ years only need to study 20 specially designated questions (marked with asterisk)
Retakes: If you fail, you get a second attempt within 60-90 days. If you fail twice, your application is denied but you can reapply.
Study tip: All 100 questions and answers are publicly available at uscis.gov/citizenship. There are no trick questions — the answers are exact.
