The English Test — What to Expect

The naturalization interview tests English in three areas:


1. Speaking
Your spoken English is evaluated throughout the entire interview. The officer assesses whether you can communicate clearly.


2. Reading
You must read one sentence in English out of up to three attempts. Sentences come from official USCIS vocabulary lists covering civics topics.


Sample reading sentences:

"Congress makes the laws."

"The President lives in the White House."

"All people want to be free."

"Citizens have the right to vote."


3. Writing
You must write one sentence in English out of up to three attempts.

Sample writing sentences:

"Lincoln was the President."

"The flag has many stars."

"The Civil War was fought to free the slaves."


Exemptions from English test:

Age 50+ with 20 years as Green Card holder (50/20 rule)

Age 55+ with 15 years as Green Card holder (55/15 rule)

These applicants may take the civics test in their native language.
